Objectiv e:The contents of total volatile oil in Perilla leaves sold on the market and those planted in Baicao Garden of Hebei North University were determined by HPLC. The contents of total volatile oil were compared to evaluate whether the Perilla leaves planted in Baicao Garden of our school reached the market standard. Methods: Total volatile oils were extracted from two kinds of Perilla leaves by heating reflux method with 20 times anhydrous ethanol in 85℃ water bath for 1h. The content of Perilla aldehyde in total volatile oil was determined by HPLC, and the content of total volatile oil in two groups of Perilla leaves was calculated. Results: According to the linear regression equation, the content of Perilla aldehyde and total volatile oil in Perilla leaves sold on the market was 0.109% and 1.162%. The content of total volatile oil in Perilla leaves planted in our school was 0.102% and 1.090%. Conclusion: Although the content of volatile oil of Perilla leaves planted in Baicao Garden of our school is slightly lower than that of Perilla leaves sold on the market, it has reached the standard of market sale.
