Increasing studies have showed that chronic stress activates peripheral and central immune systems accompanied with the release of cytokines(including proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines),which play a significant role in the pathogenesis of depression. The objective of this review is to discuss the underlying mechanisms between cytokines (including proinflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines) and depressive disorders.
