Long-term insufficient sleep can lead to cognitive dysfunction. It has been widely recognized that sleep deprivation can affect the learning and memory ability of experimental animals. In this review, we summarized the new developments regarding the impact of rapid eye movement sleep deprivation on synaptic plasticity and its molecular mechanisms in recent years, which we hope can provide some basis for relevant studies of therapeutic targets and treatment drugs in future studies.
